Let’s make your next favorite record.
Maybe you’re here because you like a project I worked on.
Maybe you just didn’t vibe with your last engineer (bummer.)
Maybe you’ve got no idea why you’re here.
Whatever reason, Hi! Come on in.
Recording music is all about capturing a reflection of ourselves - a snapshot in time of the human experience.
We identify with music in so many ways, and the sonic experience is a huge part of creating that connection.
If it’s compelling, full of life and dimension, it’ll stand on its own. All we have to do is embellish a little.
And you know what? You’re probably hiring me for my taste, but in the end it’s your art. I’m just here to guide it home.
Who am I?
Hi, I’m Nick! Mixer/Engineer/Unlicensed Therapist. Big Turk’s Speed Shop is my little mix room in Northern Michigan. The Speed Shop began as an inside joke, but for whatever reason it just stuck.
I grew up recording to tape & learned how to really make records under the mentorship of Andy Taub at Brooklyn Recording.
At Brooklyn Recording, I was fortunate to work on 4 Grammy-winning records with some of the best to ever do it. I’d have never made it this far without Andy giving me a shot.
After 7 years in Brooklyn, my wife & I headed back to Michigan to be closer to nature, family and a slower lifestyle.
Here, I run Theo Katzman’s private analog studio, Cinnamon Ranch. We run 2” 24-track tape and do most of our recordings live in one room, keeper vocals and all.
It’s a great reminder that what we do isn’t rocket science - it’s about translating emotion and energy.
When I’m not riding faders, you’ll probably find me riding my Harley or fighting the urge to punish my friends with bad puns.
